| (FREE EVENT) VAFC NIGHT AT UBC MEN’S SOCCER (FREE EVENT) IN SUPPORT OF PROVINCIAL CHAMPION VAFC WARRIORS FUNDRAISING EFFORTS ![]() The reigning National Champion UBC Men’s soccer team are off to a strong start (4 wins, 0 losses) on their campaign for a repeat National Title. They will be looking to extend the streak as they host the University of Alberta on Friday September 12th. The VAFC Boys U15 Div 1 Warriors won the Provincial A Cup in Kamloops this July, qualifying for the National Championships in PEI this October, and are in the process of preparing travel and accommodation details. At the UBC game on September 12th, the VAFC Warriors will be running some FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES as well as trying to raise funds for their trip. Also that night, UBC will be honouring three of their national championship winning teams, including the team that won nationals in 2005 in PEI. Coincidentally, one of the VAFC Warriors’ coaches, David Wong, was a member of that team and will be trying to help his son and his team, the Warriors, repeat what he accomplished with the UBC Thunderbirds, 20 years (almost) to the month: winning a National Championship on the field at U PEI! As a member of the VAFC community or supporter of the Warriors, you are invited to come out and enjoy a FREE night of high-quality university soccer and support both the defending National Champion UBC Thunderbirds as well as your Provincial (and hopefully soon to be National) Champion VAFC Warriors! EVENT DETAILS: Locations: Ken Woods Field, UBC (Directions) Time: Pre-game family activities from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, kick-off at 7 pm Cost: FREE (donations appreciated) For those unable to attend, VAFC and the Warriors have partnered with BC Amateur Sport Fund to raise money in support of the boys U15 team’s journey to the 2025 National Championship in PEI. Donations are tax deductible and will help cover travel and accommodation costs for the team ensuring these young athletes get a chance to compete and develop. Please visit the secure online donation page using this LINK. ![]() In Depth – A Serendipitous Full-Circle Moment Adding to the depth of this remarkable journey for the Warriors is a rare full-circle story. One of the Warriors’ coach-Dads won a National Championship at the very same location in Charlottetown, PEI twenty years ago this fall, as a member of the UBC Thunderbirds soccer team. Two decades later, David Wong will step back onto the same field, this time as coach, mentoring his son and a new generation of athletes on their own journey towards a National Championship. “My journey to becoming a varsity athlete and a CIS national champion, was not typical, and only possible as a result of the invaluable gift of self-belief that was “gifted” to meby my parents and coaches in my youth. Through the lessons I learned on my journey,I’m hoping to help the Warriors win a national championship 20 years on, while givingthem the gift of self-belief that will serve them well in their bright futures.” – David Wong, Assistant Coach & Dad, VAFC Warriors |
